| Also the farm offers Oregano which we sometimes export to Portugal, and is simply delicious in salads:
wild asparagus for the perfect omelet: wild mint (poleo) for a delicate tea: edible toadstools, grilled with garlic and olive oil, also from the area. During spring and summer many wild flowers enjoy the climate, e.g. peoni, anemone, blue iris (the tall elegant kind) and if you can find them "love in the mist" "Quitirrisi" is situated to the north of the province of Huelva, bordering with Portugal and the provinces of Seville and Badajoz, in one of the most extensive protected natural woodlands in Europe, with an altitude of approximately 820 meters above sea level and enjoys a temperate climate all year, which is ideal for holidays. It is a place for those who wish to be far from the madding crowd, even though Fuenteheridos is only 1 km away. There are several accesses to the park: the CN-433 (Seville - Lisbon): CN-435 (Huelva-Badajoz): CN-630(Seville-Madrid). From Fuenteheridos l klm: Castaño del Robledo 2 klms: Jabugo 7 klms: Aracena (Caves of the Marvels) 10 klms: Portugal 52 klms: Zafra 70 klms: Huelva 108 klms. Jabugo, famous for its "JAMON SERRANO" is only a quarter of an hour away and although the "IBERICAN PIG" or "PATA NEGRA" would seem to be fed as a vegetarian, the result is exquisite!! |

Jabugo, famous for its “JAMON SERRANO” is only a quarter of an hour away and although the “IBERICAN PIG” or “PATA NEGRA” would seem to be fed as a vegetarian, the result is exquisite!! These hams vary in category according to the diet of the pig – e.g. acorns from the EVERGREEN OAK” (Encina) produce a sweeter flavor than that of a diet of sweet chestnuts, and is the best quality.
There are available “FOOTPATH MAPS” from the tourist office in Aracena, which give guests the opportunity to navigate correctly through the park, and to admire and enjoy the breathtaking views. Pony trekking is also available at close proximity to “Quitirrisi”. Cork is also a natural resource of paramount importance in the park. It is hand collected every nine years, the process being called “descorche” or “pela”. Another profitable activity with a positive environmental impact likewise is the annual gathering (locally known as “apaño) of chestnuts. As far as we know chestnut groves, which
grow only on relatively deep, basic and wet soils, would have replaced the once existing vineyards, which were planted in their turn after the Reconquest in the place of older local oak woods.
Aracena, famous for its CAVES, is a must to visit, consisting of nearly l.5 kilometres of galeries and lakes and lies beneath the 12 century castle.
The “TAPAS” and local wine (inc. “MOSTO” in the autumn) are a small part of an extremely rich Gastronomy.
The cave where lived “ARIAS MONTANO” ( the soothsayer to Felipe 11) is only 4 klms from Quitirrisi and from the top of this mountain you have a breathtaking view that is hard to imagine, to the horizon is the Costa del Sol, Huelva 114 klms away!! “ALAJAR” nothing more than 7 klms away signifies “JEWEL” in Arabic and possesses all that is traditional of the area. Also between Alajar and Aracena taking the low mountain road, lies “LINARES” where you can still see women washing by hand at their circular washing place, locally known as “LAVADERO”. This custom is an ancient one and gives all women the chance for catching up with local gossip!! – a social event!!
All the local "WHITE VILLAGES", as they are known, are a joy to visit and to be able to experience the hospitality of the local people is an important part of this holiday. There are many "Festivities" - "FERIAS" or FIESTAS" as they are called, that take place throughout the year, but mostly in summer, where local customs lead the way. Our visitor is also able to experience the rich history of the area, particularly that of the Arab culture that has only too clearly left its mark.
Almonaster, 12 klms from Quitirrisi- famous for its 10 century mosque, the smallest in Spain, and some say in Europe, well worth a visit. Beautifully restored, and considered a "Jewel" of Spanish religious architecture: also in this very elegant village exists the ex-palace of the Secretary to La Reina Isabel La Catolica - "Juan
Tenorio".
Quitirrisi measures 110 m² and is built on a mountain slope, brilliantly nestled into its surroundings. The atmosphere created by its design offers peace and tranquility. It is constructed in traditional rustic style and there is a liberal use of stone and marble, both of which are locally excavated. In part the floors have been applied with the ancient technique of
"EMPEDRADO" - mosaic effect, and the rest of the flooring is slab marble from a local quarry in Navahermosa - this village can be seen very clearly from the house. Because of its situation there are 7 split levels - for this reason unfortunately unsuitable for toddlers. Doors and windows are of local chestnut wood.
